Gates Cambridge Scholarships scheme was established in October 2000 by a donation of US$210M the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to the University of Cambridge. This has been the largest ever single donation to a University in UK. Gates Cambridge Scholarship is one of the most outstanding international sholarships around the globe. The scholarships are awarded on academic merit to applicants from countries outside the United Kingdom to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree in any of the available subjects at the University of Cambridge. Unavailable Courses for Gates Cambridge Scholarships
The following courses are not available for the scholarships:
- Business Doctorate (BusD)
- Master of Business (MBA)
- Master of Finance (MFin)
- MBBChir Clinical Studies
- MD Doctor of Medicine degree (6 years, part-time)
- Graduate Course in Medicine (A101)
- Part-time degrees
- Non-degree courses
About 80 scholarships are awarded each by this scheme to students from other countries outside United Kingdom. PhD students are awarded approximately two-thirds of these awards with approximately 25 awards available in the US round while 55 are available in the International round. The scholarship covers the full cost of studying at the university which includes the tuition fees, travel costs, visa, maintenance allowance etc. Additional discretionary funding such as academic development funding, family allowance, fieldwork, etc are also covered by the scholarships. Eligibility and Selection Criteria
An applicant of the Gates Cambridge International Scholarships must be a citizen of a country outside UK who is applying to pursue any of the following full-time residential courses of study: PhD, MSc or MLitt, or any one year postgraduate course available at the University. Besides the foregoing, the candidacy of an applicant shall be reviewed under:
- outstanding intellectual ability
- reasons for choice of course
- leadership potential
- a commitment to improving the lives of others
Applicants are to submit their applications for admission and funding via the University’s Graduate Application Portal. An applicant must complete the application section if he or she is to be considered for admission.
Application deadline is categorized into two: 13 October 2021 for US citizens residents in the USA and early December 2021 or even January 2022 depending on the course for applicants not residents in USA.
